Filing a Claim after an accident

Filing an auto insurance claim requires careful attention to detail and adherence to specific steps.

Ensure Safety and Report the Accident

  • Check for injuries and call 911 if necessary.
  • Move to a safe location, if possible, to prevent further accidents.
  • File a police report, as many insurers require this documentation.

Gather Information at the Scene

  •  Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver(s).
  • Collect details such as:
    • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of involved parties.
    • License plate numbers.
    • Insurance policy numbers.
    • Witness information, if applicable.
  • Take photos or videos of:
    • Damage to all vehicles.
    • The accident scene (traffic signals, skid marks, etc.).
    • Any visible injuries.

Notify Your Insurance Company

  • Contact your insurer as soon as possible to report the accident.
  • Provide them with:
    • The time, date, and location of the accident.
    • A detailed account of what happened.
    • Documentation: (Names, addresses, and phone numbers of involved parties, License plate numbers, Insurance policy numbers, Witness information, if applicable.)
    • We advise against sending photos to the insurance company yourself.  The better choice is to have a professional, like ACA, submit photos and an estimate. 

File the Claim

  •  Work with your insurer to submit the necessary forms and details.
  • Provide additional information upon request (e.g., repair estimates, receipts, etc.).
